I don't think expressing one's opinions is useless. Your posts
about the superiority of Gibson guitars over boutique made archtops are
an equally subjective argument, but that doesn't make the discussions
useless.

I agree that Jack's interpretation of "soul" wasn't entirely
clear, so the discussion may have veered away from his original
intentions. I interpret soulful as having a foundation in the blues.
I don't hear this in some modern players (e.g. Monder and
Rosenwinkel), and as a result, I don't connect with them so much.
But their music certainly doesn't lack passion, emotional investment,
etc...
