Where's the soul?!?

I hope this doesn't digress into hair-pulling and name calling but I've
been wondering what happened to the "soul" of jazz music?

When I listen to Pops, Basie, Bird, early Trane, Miles with Herbie,
Tony, Ron & Jack, etc., there is a soul to the music that is intense.

I've always said that one reason I love jazz is that it appeals to the
intellectual and the soulful side of me. The problem is that most jazz
I've heard recently seems to be void of any kind of soul.

This is obviously just an opinion but It seems that in the process of
attempting to take jazz to the next level musically, some of us (and I
include myself) have checked our soul at the door.

Thoughts? (Let's please try to be civil here...)
