One thing that's nice about the jack on top is that its never in the
way of the support arms at the bottom of stands so you can leave it
plugged in if you want. I have a Hamer Newport pro that has the jack on
the side and its right were the stand wants the guitar to sit so you
have to lean the guitar to the side which makes me a little nervous.
Not enough to actually go to the trouble of pulling the cord though ;-)
I'm a long time 335 player and have never felt at home with the small
amount of neck access on more traditional guitars like 175s, L5s, etc.
They are kind of disorienting to me, like everything's in the wrong
place or half of the neck is missing.
As far as strings I've always used roundwound 10s and never had a tone
problem that made me want to use flats. Just roll off the tone control.
But then I like to be able to bend strings. 11s should be fine, I have
them on the Hamer and don't really feel much difference.
