That's probably a big part of it.

Also, since a lot of these guys have been playing together for so long
they all know each other very well.

They get to a point where they can basically tell what each guy wants
to do or where they want to go just from the vocabulary of their
playing (Abercrombie told me something like that).

So oftentimes they don't need to be looking, glaring, nodding, pointing
or doing any of these things you see the pickup bands doing all the
time...

Of course this is not to say that eye contact is not important, or that
they can play just as well with walls put up between them. Of course
that's not the case either.

But I think all this eye contact stuff happens in schools and workshops
where students play and don't LISTEN to each other and you hear the
teacher yelling at them to PAY ATTENTION, LOOK, SIGNAL each other and
otherwise communicate with each other. It's almost like a step into
learning how to listen to each other.

Then at one point, you turn into someone like Liebman where he can play
a whole set with his eyes closed and still be interacting very tightly
with his band...
