Rick,
If you have a licensed copy of Windows ME, you should be able to
purchase the upgrade to XP. I use XP Pro at home because I use the
machine to also connect to networks at work. XP Home is, for most, a
better choice, unless you require the advanced networking capabilities
added to the Professional edition. While the extra services can be
disabled on an XP Pro system, if you do not use them, why pay extra for
the right to turn them off? The upgrade would be less than $100.
Regarding hard drive replacements, if you also need a larger, faster
storage device, you need to provide a little information regarding the
computer in which you would install it. The prices are always coming
down (or, the capacities are getting larger) for hard drives.
Windows XP works well on almost any Pentium 4 system, with at least 512
MB of RAM, and a decent performing hard disk. The 7200 rpm ATA models
are very good.
