The Concise Oxford English Dictionary decided to

I was just reading where your cooler underground indie groups,
and, presumably, indie individuals, are releasing their stuff on
cassette tape due to the low cost and high speed of production. The
coolest way to do it is a "limited availability" cassette with a run
of about a hundred, the possession of one of which provides a greater
sense of intimacy with the band than an mp3, at least according to
newly-minted cassette tape collector Dan Gallen, who has a collection
of six tapes.

With the exception of wire recording, the cassette was the absolute
worst sounding format for the capturing and playing back of music. If
that's "cool" then I will forever be a square.

The format wasn't intended to be used for music recording but evolved
into the only option for recording at home in a form that was easily
transportable. We have the luxury of not having to carry our music on
skinny magnetic tape recorded at a ridiculously slow speed these days.
Thank God for that.

Looking back, I don't know how we survived LP records and compact
cassettes but it's important that young folks know what how hard it
was for their parents.

I didn't find LPs difficult, you just had to take care of them. Tapes of
any sort were a pain in the arse, I often want to play just one track
from a recording and winding through drove me crazy.

I still have about 3 shelf metres of LPs.

You're right about the ability to randomly access tracks on LPs. There's
also a ritual that one goes through to play a record. Some people find
it enjoyable but I'm mostly a lazy slob and lazy slobs and records are a
poor match.

Dunno. one thing about a long player is that you have to take a
certain amount of trouble to find it, take it out of it's sleeve, set
it up and so-on so by the time you get round to playing it you misht
as well sit down and listen to it properly.

CD's (and cassettes to a lesster extent) are just so easy to flip out
and play they seem to just go on as background music.

Having said that, I can't put on a CD by (for instance) Hawkins or
George Wirth and have it on in the background whilst I plane a piece
of wood.

Pete

Now there is music that you can ignore, and music that demands attention.

I've really lost interest in the sort of music that you can ignore, the
sort of thing that you put on when you have a dinner party.
