Yes, that is very good news, indeed.
I had a melanoma removed from my right forearm back in 1996.
I owe my life, seriously, to an Israeli man who walked into the NYC
Sam Ash where I worked.
He walked over to me, grabbed my right arm, pointed at my dark
brownish-black mole and said "That's no good, you have to have it
removed".............
I was a little put-off by his cold manner, but after showing me where
his leg had been butchered by surgeons trying to remove all of his
melanoma, I knew he was serious.
The next time he came in (maybe a month or so later) and it had not
been removed, he started screaming 'WHAT ARE YOU WAITING
FOR??"....................I made an appointment the next day.
The dermatologist who looked at my arm immediately said that it did
not look good, but that I should go to a plastic surgeon to have it
done because of the location and what it may end up looking like.
The plastic surgeon, Jonathan Lebowitz, turned out to be an artist.
When I got the phone call at work regarding the positive diagnosis, I
almost passed out..............Then the doctor got on the phone and
told me that it was good news, actually, because it had not spread, ie
it had clear margins all around. Still, the insurance company wanted
more clear margin, which they got.
pass out!!
Steve
Even though the second surgery resulted in a tablespoon size crater (I- Show quoted text -- Hide quoted text -
looked, believe me), no skin graft was needed due to his wonderful
talents.
I owe my life to Michael Glaser, the Israeli guy, who, by the way,
manufactures the micro-slicing machines that they use for analyzing
biopsies......................He knows the business from both ends.
Wear your sunblock, kids.
Be well, Raf.

Why would they not ask for it? It's a lot cheaper to pay for some
small extra surgery to make sure I'm clean than to pay for all the
treatment if it spreads................We do have excellent coverage,
I must say.
HE
the whole thing out and take it for microscopic study. If the margins
aren't large enough, it's probably SOP to do a wider excision--just in case.

Hi Steve,
What is 'SOP'?
HE
Standard operating procedure. I'm just cynical about insurance companies' motives. The decision to cut more tissue should rest with the doctor.
In any case, glad to hear it worked out.
