I'm clueless about Windows machines. (I'm going on seven years

Lanis wants to find a not too costly Windows laptop with full
numeric keypad built-in for her mom. I figure this wonderful
world is my most likely source of trusted info about such.
Reliability would be important.
"reliability" and "windows" in the same sentence. go figger!
I was referring to the hardware, Don... <g>

And yeah, I've been reading reviews, finding more than a few
disparaging words about Vista.

Ignore the comments. I run 3 XP machines, 2 Vista laptops (one with keypad), 2 98 machines and one Linux box. Of them all the Vista laptops are the least trouble. They have their quirks, but are much smoother and more reliable than any of the other Winders versions. They are also more reliable than my Linux file server, that tends to lock up at random intervals or forget how to talk to a monitor.

In short, ignore all the naysayers, Vista is a good, solid, release
of Windows that has suffered from the slings and arrows of those who disparage change of any sort.

I have Vista on my Toshiba laptop, OS10.5 on my iMac (totally unexpected Christmas present from Sharon), WinXP Media Center Edition SP3 on the PC I'm using right now, WinXP Home SP3 on the little Acer Netbook, WinXP Home on Sharon's desktop, and WinXP Pro on a homebuilt PC I keep as a spare. Frankly, I like them all. Vista had a bit of a learning curve, but no more than Win95 over Win 3.1. (I also ran Linux SuSE on a dual boot system years ago, but got tired of it.)

My biggest squawk with Vista was that the manufacturers of some of the components (video cards, sound cards, scanners, etc.) never got around to writing any new drivers. Will we face similar issues with Windows 7?
