Just a thought here.... You post personal information that is
protected and can be seen only by friends.....
Sort of ....
(Taking a stab here and please correct or amend as needed anybody.)
Everyone in your network is capable of sending a newsfeed to everyone
else anytime they like. Your screen has a window on top that says
"Norm is ______" and you write anything there you want anytime you
want. Or not. Its your 'status' and its public but only inside your
network of friends. You've put it up on your 'Wall.' (More about
that later.)
Below that is a scrolling list of all of your friends' newsfeeds ---
whatever they're writing in their "So and So is ______" window. You
see their 'status.'
You comment on their status as you like, either privately by email or
instant message (both within FB, btw), or publically by writing on
their "wall."
If RMMGA is like one big public bulletin board that we all share, then
these networking sites are like a bunch of individual bulletin boards
that are interactive.
Its not Personal Information in the sense that you're using it. Its
more like "this is what's going on with me right now." I wouldn't
know Joe Jordan's home address or the name of his bank through
Facebook, but I might know he's having a cup of coffee right now if
that's what he chose to mention in his newsfeed.
Helpful .....?

Actually, Sherm... people DO post their phone numbers and email addresses.
But whether it is that, or whether it is the Newsfeeds, or whatever... you
can set the privacy settings very explicitly. For EACH thing on Facebook,
whether it be personal information (like phone number)... photos...
newsfeeds... whether somebody can view your "wall"... or any number of other
items... YOU set the parameters. It is not true that "everybody in your
network" can see that information. You can decide whether everybody
globally (i.e. everyone on Facebook), just the people in your "network" (for
example, my network is Fort Lauderdale), or just your "friends" can see
certain information. Or, you can even get more specific than that and set
things just for CERTAIN friends. (For example, I might set my "newsfeed"
that only a group of 10 friends could see it... or that only a category I
have created, like RMMGA, could see a certain photo album.)
I cannot remember which are the "default" settings... but I believe it is
defaulted to "network." One of the first things I did when I set up my
account was go into those privacy settings, item by item, and changed them
the way I wanted them. I have mostly everything set just for friends.
Nobody else in my network (nobody in Fort Lauderdale... which is a HUGE
network) can see ANY of my information because that's how I have it set up.
(Unless, of course, they happen to be a friend on my list.)
Now, could somebody hack in and find that information? Who knows.
Possibly. But as I said previously, if somebody wants to find out how to
contact me, they don't need Facebook to do it. All they have to do is
google me.
Best,
Arlene
Yeah. I think I have only my cell phone listed but our home phone
number's been in the phonebook for 40 years.
Trying to sort out the etiquette/spam issues right now. Who wants to
know about my gigs and how often to tell them, ya know? I made a
Music Page that's separate from my 'me' page but now i need 'fans' so
I have to spam everybody with that, ya know? Its music. Not Amway.
