...little laptop... Did you get one of those new Acer netbooks?

Almost. My wife and one daughter have Asus eee's and the other
daughter just replaced hers (that went south) with one of the Acers.
I found a Pepper Pad for cheap that I'm giving a try. It's got a
built in remote control function, and the IR transmitter is better
that the remote that came with our TV. I'm a little geeky, what can
I say? LOL.
FWIW, those little laptops (Acer, Asus, Dell, etc.) are pretty cool devices in my book. As long as you use them for what they are and understand what they are not. My daughters use them for school and
my wife replaced her Palm thingy (which she had a bluetooth keyboard
for) with one. They'll never replace a desktop and they don't have a
built in optical drive but for typing letters, taking notes in
meetings or class, checking email (built in wifi), and such, they are
just the ticket and affordable, to boot. Not quite Star Trek
communicators... but getting there. (grin)

Agreed. I bought the Acer with the solid state 8GB HD option a couple of weeks ago, and it's a lot of fun. Windows XP Home, 1GB memory, 802.11g wireless, built in webcam and microphone, 3 USB 2.0 slots, J-45 jack, 1/8" jacks for earphones and microphone, kinda tinny sounding built in speakers, bright crisp 8.9" color screen, and fairly good battery life. That Intel Atom processor is kinda slow, but it only pulls 4 watts. The programs load noticeably slower than the average laptop. The keyboard is kinda small, but a whole lot bigger than a Blackberry. As you mentioned, they don't have a CD or DVD drive. With the SS HD, the only moving part left is the tiny cooling fan. The whole thing only weighs 2.2 lbs.
I dumped the MS Office demo and installed Firefox and Thunderbird. Still have about 3GB free HD space. It also has a 8GB SD memory card and slot that shows up as the "D" drive. Loaded it with some MP3s and JPGs. At only about $300, I like it.

I picked up a used Thinkpad T43 for $250. The idea of the little Acer appeals to me but I've got 35gb of the 80gb HD filled already on the T43.
Hmmm...I just found out that Kingston makes a 32gb SDHC card. Maybe I jumped too soon.

JD,
For about the same money, they sell the same little laptop with a 120gb hd. A little less rugged but I think those little drives are at least as rugged as the lcd screen these days. You need to figure out if you can live with the smallish keyboard and screen and live without the built in cd/dvd drive. It's easy enough to hook up an external drive via usb but it's another piece of gear to carry (and buy).
Ed,
I'd be interested to hear how xp does with the 8gb solid state drive. My daughter uses various software for school so we got her the 120gb hdd model. It runs as fast as I'd expect. Agreed... at $300 it's a winner.
