I wasn't too up on tax law in the late '70's - early '80's but we got
paid in cash every night. Frequently the take from the door put that
well over $600. For a trio playing 5-6 nights a week that was a decent
living. Maybe it wasn't "legal" but that was reality then. Only an idiot
would take a check from a club owner when they were 500 miles from home
back then. What the reality is now for musicians in clubs isn't
something I can't speak to with any authority but I doubt seriously that
club owners are issuing 1099's for every band that comes through. This
according to a friend whose primary source of income is playing casino
gigs. Maybe it's *you* who doesn't have any real world experience in
such things. That you measure a musicians success in dollars and cents
says enough about your values for me.

Several years ago, I played a weekly solo gig at a small pub in
Greencastle. I got a 1099 from it after they changed hands...paid in
cash (and beer) for a long time, and then paid in check with a 1099 at
the end of the year. Not long after that, they went to karaoke.

Don't know what they do now. Played an open mic there about a year
ago...they've moved the pub into a larger space in the inn, and gotten
all shiny and techno. Not much pubbish about it any more.
