Thanks, Tony. That's the medium set of the ones I've been using, the
EFT16s, the light set. The pkg says
"PB", but all the EFTs are the same compound.

John Pearse is developing a similar string. They will (as I understand it)
be wound with pre flattened (oval ?) wire. Several of us are eagerly
awaiting their arrival.

That makes more sense. Might as well start with flat wire.

There's the rub. To get a roundwound acoustic guitar sound, traditional
flat wound strings just sound dead. That's why the various makers have
tried grinding them flat or smashing them flat after the round wraps are
applied to the core.

John Pearse told us that he had found a way to wrap oval wire around the
core, keep the oval wraps flat against the core (not twisted) and keep
the good sound of his strings.

As I am sure many of you know, John's health is seriously bad, and I am
sure that his people are more concerned with that right now, than with
getting a new product on the market.

There has been an effort to gather some amusing stories regarding John
from those who know him. If any of you don't know how to pass them on
to him, I'll gladly do so for you.

Thanks for the tip on the John Pearse variant. I'll watch for it.

It's tough for me to visualize whether it's easier or more difficult
to do a precise wrap
of a bronze wire with one side flattened or to run a round-wound
string thru a buffer to
knock the tops off the windings...

I haven't any JP stores to contribute, but my best wishes go out to
John and family
often, along with lots of gratitude for great guitar stuff thru the
years.

It just seems odd that there are so few (or just one? ... for now)
flat-top/half round string
set out there. I figure that it's more likely that I just don't know
where to find 'em...

Thanks,

stv

When I had an archtop I used to use D'Dario "Chromes" which are polished tape wounds. They gave a nice soft "jazzy" sound when amplified, but had very little "bite" acoustically.
