I would think that from a tax standpoint that a "pro" might need to
make a certain amount of money to be considered a pro in the
government's eyes, but I don't know that for sure.

I'm curious as to what others think about this.

I knew that I went from "beginner" to "intermediate" when I signed up
for an "intermediate guitar class" and was able to test out of the
"Beginning guitar class". But, that was in the eyes of the local
community college, and the intermediate classes was really an
extension of the beginning class, not really meant for "intermediate"
players (if that term can be quantified).

Back in the late 40s early 50s, my dad played semi-pro baseball, which
meant that they paid him, but not enough to pay the rent. In my mind
that still applies - you're a pro if you make your living at it, semi
pro if you get paid but really make your living doing something else.

The word "amateur" comes from the Latin "amare", to love. An amateur
is a person who does something for the love of it, not to make money.
It's come to mean, to many, one who lacks the necessary skill to make
a living at the thing.
