does it take? (I drive like the speed limit is a suggestion of where
to start). Or is this a totally crazy idea?

I've done this a time or two, but not since the recent speed changes.
Parts of west Texas have a limit of 75 (or what you will). Have you
tried Mapquest to get a drive time estimate? I once made it from San
Francisco to east Nashville in 47 hours, total time, gas, meals and
all, but we were in a hurry. <g>
(actually, mapquest estimates about 36 hours. That's not too bad,
less than three twelve-hour days. Less if you hurry.)

The speed limit is 80 from just out of El Paso to Kerrville as of a little over two years ago. And it *is* great... since that's the part of the crossing where the traffic is so sparce that you can actually count on speeding tickets if you push the envelope out there. From San Antonio to Houston, the limit's 75, but counting on safety in numbers, I can usually move along with most of the traffic somewhere between 80 and 85. That said, I can't make the trip in the time Mapquest says is possible. For me, it's a 36 hour trip (3 days- 2 overnights) from Santa Maria, CA to the vicinity of Gulf Shores, AL. Susan's location might give her as much as a five hour advantage though.
