The kid's amazing, and that's not a reference to his age. Hell, most
folks are kids to me but to qualify someones abilties by the phrase
"for his age" (young or old) misses the point. Listen to him and
you'll understand what I mean.

I saw a guy tonight who absolutely sent me spinning. I don't think
I've ever heard anyone come out of the box with a first album this
good. His lyrics, his song structure, his singing and playing... all
wonderful.

His name is Anthony Da Costa. His album is titled "Typical American
Tragedy" and it's really something.

I’m a word guy, and it’s his writing that has me so…… amazed! He has
a song, "Porter and Dolly", about…. Yep, Porter and Dolly. Another
song called “Back of My Mind”, and “Wall Around Baghdad”…. “Dance to
this Song”….. “I’m Your Son”…. If you have a son, you should hear
this.

Here’s a small sample of what he does. The title of this is “Ain’t
Much of a Soldier”:

Hello, Darlin' can you hear me, this far across the sea?
It's you soldier boy a-callin', my darlin' Anna-Lee
I been thinkin' about you sugar, been in my dreams, you see
I been dreamin' about of your eyes, what's left of memory

Chorus

Wish you could see this sunrise, it's the sweetest thing I've seen
Since I left your smile last winter when we were just eighteen
Don't want to die for my country, but I'd die for you one day
Guess I ain't much of a soldier, hope you love me anyway

I haven't been this knocked out by someone since (and I'm being
serious here) I first heard George Wirth. If you have any desire to
give him a try, I'll make this offer: if you don't like his music,
I'll buy the CD from you! That's the same offer I made to people for
George, and I never had to send money to anyone!!

Oh, there's one more thing: it's interesting that he mentions being
eighteen in “Ain’t Much of a Soldier”.... He's not eighteen.....
yet.....

He's seventeen. Seventeen….. And he's pretty damned special.

In case you're wondering, I have absolutely no connection with the
young man, other than watching him perform tonight and buying his CD.
He has another CD with Abbie Gardner (of Red Molly fame) that I also
bought, but haven't listened to. He performed with her tonight....
Have I mentioned how wonderful it was?? :-)

And many, many thanks to George and Brenda for once again making my
life a bit better.....

Norm, thanks for exposing Anthony to the group. I have listened to and read the lyrics for "I'm Your Son" several time this afternoon. It may just be that I remember feeling the same way when I was younger or the fact that I'm about to help my son move off for college for the first time this coming Sunday. Whatever the reason, this particular song has found a special place in my life at this time.

Dwight - give a listen to one of my favorite songwriter's tunes, "Godspeed", by Radney Foster. It's on his _This World We Live In_ cd. It fits exactly what you describe. My youngest son leaves for college in about one week. "Godspeed" strikes a chord deep within me. There's a great version on YouTube where he is joined by Aly Bain on fiddle, Jerry Douglas on dobro, Danny Thompson on bass and Tommy Hayes on percussion(more <#>), all from the comfort of a living room. The video is here ...
