I need to have some periodontal work done and have been offered the
options
of sedation (triazolam) or just a local. For any of you out there who
have
had to deal with it, what do you suggest? I'd be surprised if any of
our
dentists want to "talk shop" in a guitar group, but I'd love to hear
opinions if any of you'd care to.

Thanks in advance.

Go straight for the pethadine. You might feel every scrape but you
won't care. If it works for women in labour it works for anything..:-)

Pete (Novocaine is for kids...)

Pretty self serving post, eh? Asking this bunch if I should (legally) get
doped up. LOL!

Oh come on Ed! Couple shots of whiskey's all you need. That's the way
they used to do it.

Oh - those weren't periodontists, were they?

You're right about the 35-year design spec though. Everything past
that is "bonus time."

FWIW, I've had a few periodontal surgeries, all with local. Usually
the dentist and hygenist were having conversations about everything
*but* medical stuff. I felt like a car being worked on. Of course,
periodically the dentist would ask how I was doing, as though I could
answer in some way. The results were good though.

Funny - don't remember much about any of them, other than having
stiches and once a thing in the roof of my mouth and... oh forget it!

I asked about the shots. Apparently alcohol is a blood thinner. They don't
want you to drink so the blood will clot. They said I should eat pineapple
slices or drink pineapple juice for a few days before the surgery.
Apparently there are enzymes that help with bruising and swelling. I asked
if a couple pina coladas a night would be ok. They said sure, just not the
night before.

And no, they weren't periodontists. And I don't even want to *think* about
the tools they used. Have you ever been to the Museum of Dentistry, here in
Baltimore? <shudder>

Funny thing about pain. Another one of those design spec things. We have
obviously developed the ability to block out past pain experiences. If not,
there'd be nothing but single children running around. Not that I have any
frame of reference (other than watching and having my hand squeezed as hard
as it ever has been) but if any woman remembered *that* level of pain,
they'd *never* have a second. (grin)

Wait... I'd rather hear about Maine than this stuff. (grin)

I'm the most sensitive father in the world. I felt the pain of raising
a family acutely. Unfortunately this feeling of unremitting agony was
never realised by my family.

Me to wife, during her second childbirth:

"How are you feeling?"
(Sweating) "I don't know if I can go through with this"
"I'm not sure, darling, that you have any choice in the matter at this
moment in time."
(Pethedine kicking in) "FUCK OFF AND LEAVE ME TO IT THEN!"
