I've seen Martins from before WW I that had linen side tapes. They
seem to have started using the self-adhesive stuff in the '50s some
time.
Linen side tapes go back along ways; Strad used them on 'cellos
sometimes. They work quite well in limiting the spread of cracks if
they're stuck on tight, but don't add any stiffness to speak of. The
problem with the self adhesive tapes is that the thick latex goo
allows the side to move relative to the tape, so they can't really
stop cracks. Eventually the goo dries out, and the tapes come loose,
which is a real mess.
I used to repair one performer's D-28 every three months or so.
Whenever he got back off a tour it would have a new side crack or two.
I finally got tired of the gig, took off all the silly adhesive tapes,
and put on good ones. He never came back with that problem again.
The trouble with cloth side tapes is that the glue breaks down over
time with exposure to air. You see this a lot on old instruments,
where they used to use things like cloth or even paper to reinforce
them. I put a few coats of shellac on the side tapes to help keep that
from happening. We'll find out in a hundred years or so whether it
worked!
