They are rim support strips.  Some builders choose to use wooden strips
inside to reinforce the rims,  some use 'rim tape' and others use
combinations of the two.

Years ago Martin used a brown fabric material which had a sort of
herringbone weave in it,  then they switched to a self-adhesive tape which
was,  I believe,  bookbinders tape.   They also used a few thin wooden
strips in between.

The idea is for the stuff to slightly stiffen the rims,  and in the event
that one is cracked by a blow,  to limit the travel of the crack.   In
practice I find the stuff to be of dubious use,  and it certainly makes
repairing such cracks more difficult and the work harder to conceal.   The
tape is applied before the kerfed lining,  so if you have to remove it it
must be cut below the kerfing,  and is very difficult to replace without
leaving telltale signs when you are working through the soundhole.

After 8 weeks my new Martin D28 Marquis arrived today.  Upon a close
inspection at home I see ribbon like material strips that run like binding
from top to bottom on the inside of the sides of the guitar? Any idea what
the heck this stuff is?- Hide quoted text -

Kex,

I Have a several versions.... My 73 D18 has some sort of cloth tape.
I think the 18 serise had that.  I have several 28 and above Martins
that have what appear to be strips of rosewood glued to the sides.

Collings, at least in their 1 series, has what looks to be small
mahogany braces....  The cleanest of these things I've seen are in
SCGC guitars.... tiny little works of art....
