Being an ex-fed employee, I have had every sort of training of this
ilk you can imagine. Some are way over the top; some are only
enlightening, and that is all that is necessary for reasonably smart
people. Some instructors preached and insulted; some just told us.

The over-the-top ones were hard to sit through. I flunked one of
them, but they considered who they were dealing with and just checked
off my name as having attended it.

The worst one was "Valuing Other Cultures." They should never have
forced that course on engineers and scientists. It was brutal to sit
through.

Re-sexual harassment...Condition 1. A young secretary (female) at a
desk. Fat nerd comes up and says, "You really look good today...you
want to do something exciting with me Saturday?"

Condition 2. A young secretary (female) at a desk. Tom Cruise
look-a-like comes up and says, "You really look good today...you want
to do something exciting with me Saturday?"

There should be no difference in these two conditions...but there are
because of the "unwanted" element. I have seen some really funny
skits of politically correct invitations to a date and the date
itself. ("I will now mount you...do I still have your permission?
Please state clearly so there can be no misunderstanding on my part.")

I am waiting for the class for ladies, "Understanding Your Male Work
Partners." This would include proper dress to not arouse, avoiding
obvious double-entendres, and simple things like, "If you dress for
work in a very attractive manner to the opposite sex, do not be
surprised if this is noticed and the reason you did it."

"If you wear a very tight sweater and are well endowed, or have a low,
loose blouse, it is not permissible for a male worker to touch you,
however, it is acceptable for him to notice this and perhaps politely
and quietly say, 'Wow! Nice tits!'"

This stuff is a major reason I'm looking forward to retiring. I
thoroughly enjoy my work but am sick of tip-toing through the
sensitivity-diversity etc. minefield and all the associated spam
emails, training blather etc.

Not to say that this wasn't brought on by stupid behavior, isn't
justified etc. Like Norm, I've been involved with a couple of
"interesting" cases. I've also seen complete failure of the system to
remedy blatent cases of harassment, even while the working atmosphere
was of a "walking on eggshells" nature.

One would think the solution would be obvious - mutual respect and
good manners - but it's amazing how widely people's definitions of
these terms vary (even assuming everyone attempted to live by a Golden
Rule). It also is a lot harder than it looks for people to step
outside of themselves and see the effect of their behavior on others.

Once upon a time, I subscribed to Barry Goldwater's statement that
"you cannot legislate morality." In theory I still do, but have to
concede that at times force is needed to get people to behave properly
toward one another, e.g. the 1964 Civil Rights act etc. It is unfair
to expect the victims of discrimination, harassment etc. to wait til
the perpetrators can be persuaded or otherwise become enlightened. On
the other hand, it is impossible to codify the subtlties of human
behavior and those with truly nefarious intentions usually find ways
to use the regs to their advantage, be they perpetrator or victim.

Ok - that's it. I'm done. Glad I telecommute most of the time. I can
always say my emails were forged and the address spoofed...
