Have any of you tried "Smith Micro - Spring Cleaning".
It's supposed to tidy up your hard disc and regain some space.
I used to defrag my PC regularly, but there doesn't seem to be any way
of doing it on a Mac.
Perhaps it isn't necessary ??

Hi Mike
The UNIX operating system has it's own utilities that run in the back
ground cleaning up messes, emptying old log files etc.. I have a habit
of shutting down my mac book at night when these processes are normally
running. I use a Freeware utility call MacJanitor that can handle these
tasks when needed.
Happy New Year,
Monty
Thanks Danny, Dan, and Monty for the answers.

I have been told that if I leave the Mac running, it does the housework
bit every so many hours, but wasn't sure if it was true.

Like most of us, I guess I was wondering if there was anything I could
do to "improve" the beast.

I'll probably just get some more memory (for the computer not for me),
it's only got 512 at the moment.

I'm not new to Mac, I have a G4 tower and the G5.

I certainly wouldn't consider a PC again.

Try http://www.otherworldcomputing.com

Roger that Danny...just picked up a 2gb stick from them for my MBP for peanuts. RAM is oversupplied at the moment and very inexpensive. It's also an extremely effective "upgrade" for any heavy user.

John - get Onxy. It's free, does clean-up and runs the background scripts on demand and many other things.

Frank

I use OnyX, too.
