OK, sure I live in the boonies, but I try to keep up at least somewhat
on tech. advances. So imagine my surprise when my girl dragged me off
on a shopping day - I had ulterior motives: visiting the best acoustic
guitar shop in New Hampshire as part of the trip.

Anyway, I told her I would hang out in Barnes & Nobles until she had
done her mall shopping. So, in the well stocked cd dept., I find these
magical devices that allow you to scan the bar code of any cd and here
30 seconds more or less of the first five cuts.
I was in heaven.
I listened to all sorts of music that I had heard about, but not
heard. When Michelle came to get me, I didn't want to leave.

So why for didn't I here about it first here? Huh????

The realm of cd retailing in America is a shrinking one, and Barnes and
Noble is one of
the few places remaining to find a decent selection of CDs. The big box
retailers
that once threatened the small independent shops with their loss leading
prices
on new releases are in the middle of shrinking the space devoted to CD
sales.
The selection at Circuit City and Best Buy, never one to rival the larger
independent
retailers, is shrinking and even popular artists' back catalogues are sparse
in the racks.
If you're looking for something out of the mainstream, good luck.

With the 30 second preview feature available at Barnes and Noble and their
respectable catalogue, they are poised
to be the preferred destination for many of us that still buy music on CDs.
While
their prices are high, it is nice to avoid buying those CDs that get maybe
one
listen and that's it. Finding new music is a real blast for music lovers
and a lazy
hour or two at Barnes and Noble, exploring and taking musical adventures,
has
replaced a lot of what many of us used to get from listening to the radio.
Also, at least
at our local (Lakewood, CO) B & N, the music department is staffed by folks
that know their stuff.

I found my new favorite artist, Josh Ritter, in one of these "30 second at a
time
musical adventures" a few months ago. B & N is a great resource to have,
now
that all but one of our large local independent stores has gone out of
business.

And thanks to you, Kevin, many in rmmga HAVE now heard it here first :-)

cheers

Paul
