Musically he is not a beginner. He knows his way around the tunes. If he
wants to start in DADGAD and is focused entirely on stuff that is often
rendered via that tuning, I doubt his choice of tuning will slow him
down.

If you hear advanced players in DADGAD the standard tuning versatility
thing is right out the door.
