Out on a limb here...
In the way back, before Virgin Records was what they are, they put out
some
whack stuff. In (or around) '75 or '76 they put out a sampler. On the
album cover was a hand making a V sign but if you counted the fingers,
there
were 6 fingers. It had some great music on it... Henry Cow, Slapp
Happy,
Gong, Ivor Cutler, Mike Olfield, Tom Newman, Tangerine Dream, etc.
Does
anyone know if it was ever re-released on CD? I still have the
(double)
album but no turn table set up (and not even sure if the one I have
works
anymore). I would *love* to find this if anyone has seen it. It was
just
after Olfield had scored it big with the soundtrack from "The Omen" so
they
signed everyone he suggested. I almost get the impression that Virgin
would
just as soon forget they ever had any connection with some of these
bands.
Thanks for any help.
Ed
I don't think so... This is mostly minority taste stuff even back in
its
heyday. I'll see if I can find something out. Virgin and Branson can't
be
arsed with accessing any of their archive stuff these days.
Your best bet might be to find someone with a good vinyl deck and stylus
and
ask them to archive it and then burn it onto a CD for you. There are
vinyl
decks for sale now with encoders and usb connection for doing just
that -
archiving your LPs. I think they're about 250 USD upwards... You can
also
archive LPs to mini discs very cheaply and quickly. Full size hifi
system
MD
decks are very cheap to buy.
OTOH, I've just invested in a 25 year-old cartridge (new old stock) from
a
guy in California... now that's a risk... but he says not. We'll see.
Good luck with that.
CR
Thanks Chris. You think it was "minority taste" in the UK? You had to go
to specific shops to even find it here in the States. I keep thinking
about
setting up to transfer a few obscure records... but never get to it.
Ed
The Guardian newspaper in the UK recently ran an offer for a record
deck which would burn CD's for you. It was ludicrously cheap (£139 -
$270) if you mail them they'll let you know if it's still available or
tell you where to source it.
Try www.guardian.co.uk - there will be an address there somewhere
where they respond to consumer enquiries.
Pete
Wow... now that I look, they are as low as $90 us at places like
amazon.com.
