I got four free issues for buying a new Martin in April. The Thompson
issue is my second. So far I'm ho-hum on the rag. I enjoyed last
month's issue with Kenny Wayne Shepherd (never heard of him before).
I have no clue who Thompson is and don't really care. Which is more
important: practice or reading a mag about great players? Easy
decision for me. I'm not up to the skill level yet of being able to
play some of the samples although I would love to learn how to play
"Beneath the Sally Garden" in this month's issue. It's been one of my
favorite songs since I heard it performed on APHC by that family band
from Cape Bretton Island.
The one thing that amazes me about the magazine is the sheer number of
guitar manufacturers. It's ludicrous. Like I read in a book recently
on history of the guitar, this industry is going to crash horribly in
the next recession. And rightly so. Like the automotive industry
before the depression, is there really that big of a difference
between the tone of a Parkwood, Breedlove, McPherson and all the other
highend wannabes compared to a Martin, Taylor, or Gibson? Somebody
either has magic ears or is busy stroking their own ego playing the
latest innovation.
So for me it's an easy decision. Four issues is all I'll ever get.
