In my own family on my Father's side I didn't have direct descendants

My mother's Grandfather, Francis Asbury Shoup was a Confederate --a
West Point grad and a general of artillery under Johnston in the
West. And her Father was named for his colleague, another CSA
General, Stephen Elliott. There's a lot of documents around about
both men and I hoping to make more of a study of my Mother's side of
the family including some of the battle history after I retire.

I'll count my step-dad's great uncle Horace B. Hale of 147th NY, Company B,
as family.

My uncle (on my mom's side) tells me we have a Simpson ancestor who was
captured during the fall of Vicksburg. My step-dad, an avid genealogist,
believes he was lieutenant Charles Simpson.

It is also quite possible that Apples (mom's side of the family) from NC
were present at Gettysburg, though they may have been present in name only.
They were from western NC, troops that had a habit of fighting fiercely when
present, but of wandering back home when the need or desire arose.

I am honored to count these people among my ancestors, especially Mr.
Simpson. Vicksburg was a nightmare for its defenders, and simply to survive
the disease, starvation, and regular bombardment is a victory all its own.
