I'm probably gonna mutilate this question - but hopefully the good
folks here will be able to interpret what I am trying to ask without
too much trouble...
I am a singer/songwriter type that plays mostly (~75% of the time)
quiet acoustic gigs here in and sometimes out of town. My two
workhorse guitars currently are a Santa Cruz OM/PW and a Larrivee
OMV-03R. And I love them both, with maybe the OM/PW being called into
duty about 70% of the time. The Larrivee I take mostly out on the
road. They both have B-Band's AST pickups in them. These instruments
with phosphor bronze coated strings either Elixirs or D'Addario EXPs
work really well for me. I play kind of like an acoustic soul/groove
style ala John Mayer or Dave Matthews meets James Taylor.
Here's my question - for about the other 25% of the time, I play with
a three piece combo set up or full band. Depending on the situation.
For these gigs, I'd like to have an axe that maybe has a bit more of a
bite to it. And maybe with easier action and a faster neck for some
licks/riffs. That I can also turn up. I'm of a smaller build with
kinda stubby fingers on a smallish hands. Which is why I love the OMs
so much. They just fit so well.
So, is there an instrument out there that you guys can recommend that
maybe has a bit more electric blues sound to it and yet isn't too far
away from the sound of an acoustic instrument? I guess for me what
this instrument would sound like would be the sonic love child of the
union between a Santa Cruz OM guitar and a Nashville (or really any
cool) Telecaster. I love the Tele sound(albeit maybe a bit warmer)
and that of Richard Hoover's instruments.
I thought the Taylor T5s would be it. But I recently played a T5 thru
a Princeton Reverb and couldn't get it to sound "right" for me. The
treble was way "honky" and the lack of a wound G was just driving me
insane. Plus the balance on the high B and E just sounded way off. I
don't know if I just didn't have it EQ'd right. But that wouldn't
have been a cool solution. If I had my druthers, I guess I'd prefer
to stay in the acoustic world. It'd be nice if I could also take this
guitar in for smaller acoustic gigs.
Some folks here have mentioned Tom Anderson's Crowdster but at close
to over 2-3K, it's way out of my budget. I'd rather just pick up an
used Nashville Tele and suffer through it. I also have a Peavey
Classic 50 tube amp and a Yamaha Magicstomp II pedal.
Again, I'm sorry if this question is just mangled. Please feel free
to ask questions to clarify. Thanks for your attention. With your
help, maybe I can put away some cash and get something useful,
preferably used, by Christmas.
Thanks
Charles
Have a look at the G&L ASAT models, there are several different pickup styles. I finished up with an ASAT when I went out to buy a Tele.
