Mystery guitar

My mate in the local store got an interesting guitar to day. Apparently
owned by a very famous US country singer whose identity I have been asked
not to divulge, and with his initials scratched on the top, that look as old
as the rest of the guitar.

It is badged "Gibson" with a gold stick-on transfer that is peeling off, and
has "J 45" (no hyphen) stamped on the neck block, no other ID. It is cutaway
square-shoulder sunburst dread, ladder braced. It has a Gibson-style open
moustache bridge that is not genuine rosewood. At least the back and sides
are solid timber (it is falling apart), and the fittings look old. - Good
quality 3-on-a-plate tuners with rectangular off-white buttons. It has
"1954" scratched on the top in addition to the initials, and they look the
same age and style. The headstock looks a bit big and clunky for a Gibson. I
think it is a copy, but it is good quality and looks older than high quality
Japanese knockoffs. Any ideas as to its provenance?

Thanks,

Tony D
