Hello,
I bought a heritage archtop and found that it had dead high F# in the
second (B) and third (G) strings.
I tried fat finger to add mass to the headstock but this didn't do
much.
The tailpiece I had on the guitar was a metal "finger style" one and
had a lot of metalic overtones so I replaced it with a ebony
tailpiece.
After installing the ebony tailpiece I noticed that the dead note
moved up to high A in the second string.
I wonder what's the cause for the dead note to move up so high, maybe
it's the mass of the new ebony tailpiece .
I previously tried to add a lot of mass to the headstock but no weight
moved the dead note more then 1/4 tone.
I hope some expert can help shed some light on the issue.
I read Luthier Al Carruth posts about dead notes and the different
modes that cause them and I don't seem to see how any of the three
dead note types relates to the dead note I have.
The first type he mentioned was when the air mode and the first top
mode are octave apart and this causes dead note on G on the E string.
The second type was that the top mode and the back mode where too
close.
The third was that some part of the top mode causes the bridge to
vibrate "sucking" the energy out of the string.
Thanks,
Yoni.
Take it to a decent techhie.
