I totally waste strings, I don't sweat that much but it seems to be
hydrochloric acid! So I basically agree with the consensus - I don't
like brand new strings but I don't like really old ones.
Except for me "brand new" means less than two hours old, and "really
old" is about 6 days.
One of the many reasons you should never let me play your guitar!

Jim,
Tried coated? D'Addario EXP are nice and not too pricey, same with Martin
SP+, but to answer the OP's question in the same sentence - Martin SP
either Medium or Special Light 80/20 bronze just play and play. Wonderful
sound - bright yet rich - and a very long sweet spot. Wiped down well (I
swear the best wipe is the top of an old poly or poly blend dress sock -
preferably with a classy argyle pattern!) they'll last as long as you'd
probably want to keep a set.
Now, one of the things folks like about the Elixir NanoWeb with their thin
coating - and this coating covers the works after the wrap is on the core
- is that they sound "broken in" from the start, and as coated strings,
will hold that sound for, it's claimed, 3-5 times as long as uncoated.
Again, the 80/20 SPs are all brass coated - including the unwound ones,
and that just seems to make them resist micro-corrosion better than
others. Also, again, the EXP and SP+ are coated before winding, so they
are still subject to "crud" in the windings - though wiping is your friend
here - but won't sound as "damped" as coating the whole she-bang as
NanoWebs, or even moreso PolyWebs.
