HTH,

E
El McMeen

We surely do, don't we? And we surely do appreciate you pointing this
out.

And I am surely this is correct.

Once on alt.english.usage, a fellow, who like a lot of Americans, had
English as his second language, asked why we used "why" the way we do.

His example was an actual case he heard while shopping --

"Do you have yellow socks?"

"Why, yes, we do."

He wanted to know why the "why" in that answer and could someone parse
the sentence for him.

This discussion went on for at least two weeks. <g>

I would like to give other examples from that group but we do not use
such out-of-context terms here. We appear more refined than they
(appear).

Ken

And, this curious fellow was a native speaker of some language that
functions entirely without idioms... Esperanto perhaps?

As a bit of a dust head, I'm *surely* tempted to look in on this English
usage group. It is indeed so tempting that I'm not *sure* I will be able to
resist, despite the *sure* distraction from my guitar playing that it would
*surely* pose.

Jeff

Jeff, give them a flutter. There are some real interesting people
there. Just don't use my name. I might be remembered. I don't think
anyone would say much nice about me...like here. <g>

Lurk before you post and check and re-check before you submit. You
will still miss a bunch of stuff. They will happily, and not so
gently, point out your errors so you and the rest of the world can be
enlightened. Beware Ken Folliet.
