Actually, America is just another country trying to make a living,
just like the rest of us.

It is certainly not the envy of the world. The rest of the world has
got better things to do than look to America. At the moment, we're
mostly looking at China and India.

One of my doctors is from Bombay (that's the way he says it, I know
others say it differently). He told me of a friend of his in India
who's trying to come to the US. He asked him why. The friend said he
wanted to go to a country where the poor people are fat.

I don't see that many folks lined up to go to India or China.

India is wierd. You go to villages where the kids are watching
satellite TV powered by generators whilst the mother is in the front
of the shack grinding her own corn to make bread. Kind of one ancient
culture clashing with modern day consumerism.

It won't be very long before it's a very powerful economy indeed (of
course it's true to say it's already a powerful economy - you can't
have a country of about a billion people without a fierce economic
drive).

China is well on the way there. In the recent debate about carbon
emissions, the fear was not that the USA would fail to control it's
carbon pollution, but that China would just ignore the rest of the
world during the period of it's (almost) post-communist expansion and
make global warming worse.

The action, in other words, is in the East.
