Lately, while in the process of doing a bunch of CDs of some of the
musicians of rmmga, I was re-impressed with the talent here. This
newsgroup is a great site for a lot of information but foremost, there
are some really good guitarists here.
I heard one guitarist on the CD and said to myself, ?if I could sound
like that, I wouldn't need to play anything else.' This meant that I
would not play any other style but that one if I could play it that
well.
Many of us might like to sound like Doc Watson, but how many of us
would like to sound like Doc Watson only...doing only the type of
songs that he does the way he does them?
So I devised this little fun question and decided to restrict it even
more by limiting the question to just this newsgroup.
"Who on this newsgroup would you rather sound like? Not in addition
to what you already do, but exclusively."
This is a Faustian question because where you gain one way, you lose
in another. This makes the decision more critical.
It is my question so it is fair that I answer first. I was listening
to Kent Fishburn play "That's What I Like About The South" and
"Nagasaki" when I thought how much I wish I sounded like that. I have
heard Kent do other songs as well...and this desire includes his
harmonica work. If I could play that style, that well, I would forsake
the others.

I love a lot of the other players here (and elsewhere), but I'm quite
happy bumbling along as me.
And I'm slowly getting better.

Mike, that last statement is inspiring. I wonder if we can all say
that. Actually, we all can't because I can't -- I am not getting
better. I am learning more songs and chords and stuff, but I am
getting no better. I am doing more just as poorly when doing less five
years ago. I was probably as good as I will ever be back in 1980.
Ken
Ah, but your "poorly" may be better than my "better" <g>.
Though somebody did say that I had "a nice style" recently.
To have a recognisable style seems to me to be an accomplishment of sorts.
MJRB
Mike, that is interesting...no one has ever said anything about my
style: music or otherwise. If they had of, I would have remembered. I
guess I don't have one.
It is different to say that a fellow has no style about something than
saying that he has no style. Having a style would be better than
having no style.
Some folks may have social style and class. Some might have just one
of these. Of the two, style is easier to attain. I know I have no
class...mmmm...and since no one has commented on my style...maybe I
should have said that I was at my least worst in 1980.
I have been up a long time...and I am babbling...
Ken
