And the astronaut was fired.
I like the way NASA handled this. First, was "She needs the support
of her astronaut family and we will press on as if that never
happened. That would be best for her and it is the desire of NASA to
be every aid we can be for her.".
But in the background, the NASA lawyers (and they have plenty) were
trying the back-room level of support..."How the hell do we get rid of
this crazy woman!"
Finally, they decided to take the political road...someone pointed out
that since she was military, NASA had little claim or obligation to
her. I am sure the lawyers leaned back, laughed, and told the
paralegal that was a good point.
So since NASA could dump her, they did, and PA did their usual..."NASA
has no internal provisions for handling a military matter so..." and
it went on and on. And that all meant, "Support? What support? Fire
her!"
So what do you do with her come annual reveiw time if you are her
supervisor? I don't have a box in my employee performance form that
covers attempted kidnapping in the "gets along with coworkers"
section.
Your reference to an employee's performance form triggered
a memory from about forty-five years ago. I was filling out
a job application and there was a question, "Where in this
company do you see yourself in ten years?" There is no good
answer to this question. Somewhere along the way I heard the
perfect response: "At a position of sufficient authority
where I could fire the *** who put this question in a
job application."
