Re: Mahogany OM

I have a Martin D18 that I purchased new in 1972. Since purchasing an SCGC OM (advance bracing) in the mid 90s I have not used the D18. If I do try to use the D18 I find my shoulder really bothers me and the narrow nut bothers me. I do not really expect that I will ever use it or any other dreadnought again.

I find there are times when I miss the tone of a mahogany guitar. My thoughts have been moving towards obtaining another OM sized guitar but this time in Mahogany.

I am thinking a safe purchase would be to just go out and buy an SCGC OM/PW in mahogany. I think that would be the safe approach to getting another guitar I would be happy with. I think that would the best way of getting the same feel and playability as my rosewood SCGC OM. I have not yet played one.

I was in a store recently having a discussion with someone who talked about how one's playing improved when owning guitars that are different. I also own an Eastman with a 25" scale. I was thinking of an SCGC OM short scale until I realized they made them 24.75 and not 24.9". Although my Eastman and SCGC OM have light gauge strings with 12 on top, I was surprised at how it took me a while to adjust to the additional string tension (from longer scale length?) when after not playing my SCGC OM for a week.

I saw a Merrill OM-18 in mahogany that I found interesting. That was interesting. It's been a long time since I have played a Martin OM guitar. The Merrill is definitely higher in cost than I am used to paying. (At this point I found myself thinking about the cost of ownership and future value.)

I suspect I have written enough to generate some comment. Obviously I am really confused and need some more input to add clarity or more confusion.

(Back to thinking about music for the moment instead of gear.)

Although I don't see them listed currently on Martin's website, this summer I played both a new and a nearly new OM-16GT which were quite reasonable (under $1000). They had that mahogany sound, and were quite playable. I bought one.
