banging on about guitar mics .... again

I'm still searching for a good but affordable (say up to $300) mic suitable
for recording guitar. I have used and rejected a used Shure SM81 but I found
the sound thin and unappealing. I really need something that captures the
shimmer and sparkle.
I also have a Rode NT1A which is good but I find it is absolutely too
sensitive to lower registers and ends up transmitting a lot of boom
regardless, pretty much of where I place it (except maybe several feet away
at which point it picks up a lot of other ambient sounds).
I think I need a small diaphragm mic rather than a large one. Something I
can focus more easily on the sound source. I read elsewhere that the Shure
KSM137/SL is a good mic but at the top end of my budget. As you can't try
before you buy it is difficult to decide without at least some kind of
recommendation.
My sound recording equipment is a Yamaha AW1600, btw, if that dictates what
I should be using.
Any ideas or thoughts, gratefully received.
