flamenco plate

Hi,

I'm looking for an alternative for a "plate" to protect the top of a
flamenco guitar. What I've seen everywhere is a plastic plate, but I
really don't like plastic. What was used before the plastic was
available ? Would a very thin layer of wood do the trick ? Which wood ?
