I'm of a mind that psychological addiction exists whether one is using
drugs, sex, food relationships, alcohol or whatever. Your outlook on
life may well have sucked anyway in the face of stone cold sobriety,
pot just magnified what was already there. In the process my ongoing
self-examination I decided that my problems were indeed *my* problems.
As I "got my mind right" I found I had less desire to drink,
smoke....you name it. Chicken or egg? Personally I'd rather see pot
legalized and taxed rather have the prisons filled with otherwise
decent folks to the tune of $50,000/year per prisoner. This number
takes on more significance when you consider the Bureau of Justice
Statistics numbers that put our incarceration rate for 2004 at 486 per
100,000. That's around $72 BILLION just for the cost of incarceration
to say nothing of the cost for all the agencies engaged in the "war on
drugs" and the social costs. We incarcerate our citizens at a rate 5 to
8 times greater than the industial nations most like us, Canada and
Western Europe. We even exceed the rates of Russia and South Africa by
a significant margin. Regardless of your political stripes this should
be a cause for concern for every American. How long before we have the
makings of our own version of Bastille Day?
