Agreed... With the curare, those Amazonians figured out what dose would
kill the prey and not the hunter eating that prey many years ago.
Elsewise, it would be something we hear of in legends... or not at all.
It was modern chemists and doctors who figured out exactly what the effect
on the human body was and figured out it could be used beneficially.
Thankfully so, it was a pleasure to meet you at EC. (grin) It would be
interesting to see numbers on heart disease in ancient Amazonians.

That whole line of thinking adds fuel to the fire (pun semi-intentional).

The thing with cigarette smoke is that there are lots of chemcals in
there. We know that at a given level, (just picking one) acetone would eat
right through the lacquer of a guitar. With experimentation, we could
figure out exactly how much is in a cigarette, and emit that much acetone
into the air and see how many cigarettes it would take to damage....
blah, blah, blah. (I get tired of hearing myself type sometimes.) It
might even be that in that miniscule concentration, it is beneficial!
Then we'd have to start with one of the other chemicals. Then we'd have
to see what combinations of the chemicals in smoke do. (OTOH, if the
tobacco company vaults were opened, we'd probably have that information at
our fingertips. (grin).

There is some talk of using nicotine as a medicine. I can't remember the
details. But in smaller dosages it apparently has positive benefits (can't
remember the details). Of course, in larger doses, assassins can use it to
kill you. ;>)
