Too lazy to google.
It's not really a vocal style, but a method to make
the notes more easily read for the songs. Do re me
were easily recognized by most, but fa so la te were
more difficult to the novice singer when reading the
sheet music. So rather than the little circle and the
staff, they used little triangles, squares, etc., to
make the pitch more easily recognized. It was used
extensively in the southern U.S. in voice schools and
churches around the late 1800's.
Wade has another slant on it that also appears to tie
it into an actual vocal style. I'll have to rent the
movie "Cold Mountain" to learn more.
