Roger,
I thought about that, but then I also wondered if he'd wind up giving
me bad feedback and reduce my 100% rating. I'd like to keep my rating
in tact because I still buy K&K pups and JP strings on eBay. I figured
the safest thing to do is give no feedback at all.

What a great system!

Yes I was thinking that too - NOT. I haven't ever bought anything on
e-Bay. And I wouldn't buy a musical instrument this way.
The one thing that can be said, is that it is a powerful Internet tool for
bringing potential buyers and sellers together and allows people a
marketplace for obscure and specialist things.
But if normal retail selling activity of all sorts can be abused and it is,
then so can eBay and even the scoring system that eBay use. Why we should
expect different standards of behaviour on the Internet as compared to face
to face selling, I find bemusing.
For instance if you were selling ad space to traders and you knew some of
those customer traders were criminals thieves and targeting the vulnerable -
would you still take their money?
That is exactly what the Yellow Pages all around the world do - take the
money and stand back knowingly whilst people get ripped off. I've done work
in this area and seen it first hand.
Today it's a question of take the money and look the other way.

Caveat Emptor...
Jeez , it took me a long time to drag that one out of my appalling
memory.

Well Pete, Sure but just how can the buyer - old, young, vulnerable,
trusting, ignorant - be aware... ? Or are such people just fair game for
the con-man or criminal in your view?
If the trader is in the YP (itself offering an aura of respectability); or
lying about their credentials, prices; or if using trade orgs and symbols to
gain confidence (rightfully, truthfully or wrongly); and if the YP knows the
rogues (which they largely do from the many complaints they receive) do they
not have a responsibility to intervene?
All the TV consumer watchdog progs in the world are a total waste of time if
criminals can't be stopped from *trading* with the gullible; or being able
to intentionally steal and cheat the vulnerable in the first place. The
OFT, CC, Local Councils, Health & Safety, YP, police and more are all
involved. I'm sure its much the same in the USA. Nowadays even some of the
larger corporations are at it big time - ripping people off.
