But that's the nature of the IC - if you're getting jumped
on by a buncha people, it looks like they're all members of
some sort of IC. Maybe that's what you've experienced,
and why others don't know what "IC" you're talking about.
It looks different depending on where you're standing.
But I think you're generally right - there IS a certain
cliquiness around these parts. And people sometimes band
together to gang up on someone else. But I don't think it's
one IC, I think it's several sort of vague cliques of good ol'
friends. And some of them are just chronically cranky once
they decide you're a Bad Guy but most of them don't seem
to hold perma-grudges.
You pretty much nailed it here. It's also kinda fun to read that two
folks looking over their shoulders for evidence of the imaginary "IC"
each thought the other was a member.
While "IC" sounds really sinister and organized, it's really just
"regulars", some of whom have met in person, and many who haven't.
Bottom line, folks in this newsgroup tend to treat each other as real
people, rather than just typing machines on the other end of an
Internet connection. And like any other real people, sometimes we get
cranky, sometimes we're funny, sometimes we say too much after a few
drinks, and sometimes we're sincere.
Over the years, lots of folks have passed through and done exactly
what Loki did here...stir things up for sport. When someone makes an
initial (and loud) entry into the newsgroup, it's often hard to tell
if they're just exciteable, or if they're trolling. The regulars,
having seen it happen a BUNCH of times, are often dismissive. Time
usually tells whether it's a troll or just an enthusiastic
introduction.
Yes, it's true Wilbur. You and Zeke are part of the Inner Circle now.
Frightening, eh?
(Hopefully, we can get another 100 posts on my use of the word
"frightening")
With 20/20 hindsight, there have been some hilarious entries to the
fray by folks that are now "regulars". At the time, they were very
serious and fraught.
As far as this thread...John responded a couple of times, saw where it
was going, and dropped out...sure sign that he knew what was coming.
Now there are dozens of posts arguing about how he SHOULD have
responded, whether he was truly profane, whether he's a member of the
inner circle, whether he's stifling speech, etc.
It's pretty funny to run into this thread after the fact. Loki knows
what he's doing.

Frightening, eh? So you espouse the incarceration of people who live in
two-story houses and like to eat hardboiled eggs while laying in bed
dipping the egg in the salt placed conveniently in their belly buttons?
Well put 'em up, put 'em up. You've got a fight on your hands.
What? This is abuse? Arguments it down the hall? Sorry, never mind..
John
