Just listened to the new John Prine ("Fair and Square") (well, it's
new to ME...), and enjoyed the HELL out of it.
Great stuff on that one, folks...if you like Prine, check it out.
Could be Prine's best work in many, many years. Certainly the
strongest set since "The Missing Years."
I had the same impression--it sounded like it could be a direct
follow-up to "The Missing Years" (which is one of my all-time favorite
Prine albums).
Personally my favorite Prine effort remains "Sweet Revenge", though
"The Missing Years" is certainly in the top 4 (along with his debut CD
and "Bruised Orange").
A few years older, but a recent discovery to me is Tom Russell's "The
Man From God Knows Where." A classic by any standard. Has not been out
of my player since I got it a few months back and would easily be on
my desert island list.
I'll have to check that out--not really familiar with Tom Russell's
work.
Tom Russell is an undiscovered American Treasure. The first time I saw
him in concert was in 2003, three days after I saw Springsteen for the
first time. As good as The Boss was, Tom left a more lasting
impression. Look for him in your area and when he comes, be the first
in line. You will thank me afterwards.
As for "The Man From God Know's Where" it is a CD in the class of Sgt.
Pepper. Heads up though... It is an acoustic folk opera featuring Dave
Van Ronk, Iris Dement, Delores Keane, the great Andrew Hardin on
guitar, and Walt Whitman. Do not put it in your player until you have
90 minutes uninterrupted to listen to it.
