I'm certain you wouldn't perceive this Steve (and don't take that
wrong, I have a very fine impression of you in general), but it is
indeed me.

When I talk to leftists, they consider me a hard core conservative.
When I talk to far righties, they consider me a card carrying member of
the loony left.

Fact is, I distrust both parties and vote on a candidate by candidate
basis (I excoriate Bill Clinton ... but I voted for him. The first
time anyway) I also take issues one at a time on my own terms.

I believe in a woman's right to chose, gay people's right to join
fairly in society, I believe there are legitimate forms of control on
weaponry in our communities, that the national drug war is out of whack
and usually unfair, I believe in the importance and correctness of stem
cell research, the non interference of government in most end of life
decisions and I think teaching a belief in biblical creation, even
cleverly disguised, is not a legitimate topic of an educational course
in science.

On the other hand, I despise big government, I believe in equality of
opportunity, not of outcome, I believe in the power of freedom and
democracy to overcome tryanny and think that an extraordinarily capable
military combined with a willingness to use it, and a take no bullshit
UN Ambassador are all fine ideas that will make the world better and
safer.

I don't believe I know everything or that I am always right, but I find
the party faithful on both sides to be people who compromise logic,
rational thought and hard core honesty in the interest of dogma and
doctrine. They are fundamentally fascists, IMO. Both sides.

With that perspective ... I am non-partisan and hell yes think the
reaction to the Cheney incident is comically overblown.

Rob -thanks for the description of your political leanings. I believe
you and I would agree on most, if not almost all, political issues. I
often feel disjointed because I do feel that some of my views are very
liberal, some conservative, and some downright libertarian. People who
label, most often label me liberal - but I believe that is because I
don't toe the line of my hard right friends and they tend to label more
than others (imho), and label anyone who doesn't toe the line as
"liberal" in spite of evidence to the contrary.

ANYway.... I am a hunter of birds and large game, and have been since
a kid. I am totally, and compulsively indoctrinated and practice
safety and conservative shooting. I pass and fail to take shots to a
fault.

I have almost no patience for those who make stupid mistakes while
handling firearms. I believe, that no matter how you color it, Cheny
made a horribly stupid mistake and a person was injured because of
that. A 28 gauge, penetrating clothing and causing injury is not in
ANY way "peppering". I've had pellets from shotguns "pepper" me - from
long range - and unless they hit you in the eye, do no damage,
certainly not penetrating either skin or clothing.

"peppering" in that sense is indeed a fairly common thing - but still
is a mistake whenever it happens. Injury like the guy Cheny shot is in
NO WAY a "common" or acceptable situation. If that ever happened with
anyone I know, I would NEVER hunt with that person again, and would
have a long lasting, if not permanent, disrespect for that person as a
hunter.

I also believe that an injury of that extent should have been reported
to local law enforcement and that they would have an interest in
finding out the details. I have no reason to thnk it was anything but
a stupid accident, but still, that should have been determined.

In addition to that, Cheny was incredibly stupid for not standing up
in front of the press that very day and saying what he said recently -
that it was his fault, it was an accident, he feels horrible about it
and is very sorry. I do believe that is how it happened and how he
feels. It's still very stupid to happen, not within any 'common'
occurence, and very, very stupid the way he handled it.
