Don't worry about the strings separating. They like that. It gives them
exercise.
I live in an area with very hard water, and we don't have a softener in our
house. I used regular water a few times in my PW humidifier and it sort of
hardened the absorption material, so much that I can't put water in where
it's supposed to go - I have to use the side holes. And this was from only
a few times of non-distilled water use - so, yes, it's important to use
distilled water. But it's cheap, and a gallon will last a long, long time.
Just don't use beer.
