Magazines have pretty long lead times for publication. With the exception
of magazines like Time and Newsweek, I've read letters to the editor that
referred to articles from months before. If you really want an answer it
wouldn't be out of place to follow-up with a phone call after two weeks, but
keep in mind that you gave them a suggestion they may not want to put into
place.
Also, it's not unusual for any magazine to read your idea and not respond,
even if it's a good one. And e-mails and letters often get lost in the
shuffle. If they took the time to respond to everyone who wrote them they'd
have no time to produce a magazine, which is pretty good on it's own, IMO.
About the only time you "should" expect a response is when you are a writer
pitching an idea for an article.
