***** NOTE *****
I wrote a whole bunch of stuff here - probably too much and too long,
but I'm too lazy to edit it. I just wrote it off the top of my head
in response to your post because you seem to be more sensitive to
things than some others around here, for whatever that's worth. SOrry
it's so long - I don't knwo that you really want to invest THAT much
time into reading it. Speed-read it... that'll help.
******************
I make my music purely for the joy of making the music. I've never
had any illusions about selling much of it. I think Amazon has sold
just about all of the 30 copies I sent them, but I haven't reached a
threshold point at which they would send me a check, I guess, because
I've never seen a dime from them. I know theyve sold at least 10 or
so, because of people I know who have bought them.
You can also download my songs individually on iTunes - I know because
I have done it (just to see if it worked - and it did). So I know
I've sold at least 99cents worth of product on iTunes. But agin -
they didn't send me my 75 cent royalties (or whatever it is).
I'm not particularly worried about getting the money from them,
because I don't need the money and it would be more of a hassle to get
any money out of them than it would be worth.
Plus, I like my music, but I don't know that anybody else does. I
have gotten good feedback from friends and acquaintences, but I figure
they're just being polite. I mean - what are they going to tell me -
that it sucks?
Actually - my mother's next door neighbor told me that it was okay,
but "You know, you really *can't* sing." Gee, thanks. I told her Bob
Dylan can't sing, either, and he's done okay. And one time I was out
visiting my mother and brother, and I brought along a demo I had made
of several songs with another guy singing who has a better voice. My
mother said, of course, that she preferred the other guy's demo
version to the one with me singing. My brother said that he preferred
my voice, and my mother blurted out "Well, that's a bald-faced lie!"
Gee, thanks, Mom.
Anyway - I make good money at my job, I don't need the money from CD
sales, and I know I'm not going to sell many, and I put about zero
effort into trying. I don't do marketing. So I have all these CD's
that I had manufactured, and it's not like they're doing me any good
in my basement, so I give them away at my open mic gigs. I figure I
get a couple benefits that way: 1) More people hear my music, and 2)
I clear out a little room down in my basement.
If you want one, just send me a mailing address (you can email me via
the website from that other thread - it seems you know my name and
website), and I'll send you one. Or you can buy one from Amazon.com.
It used to be on CD Baby as well, but I don't see it there now, so
maybe it rolled off or something - I don't know.
As for why I use an alias - I dunno, no reason in particular. But
consider the venomous response to my innocuous mention of a humorous
term. I mean, fer crying in the soup - if THAT was the most offensive
thing ever to show up on usenet, the internet would be a very
different place. I haven't called anybody any names nor have I said
anything derogatory to anyone (aside from the comment about 19th
century attitudes towards women). But just count up the names that
I've been called here - and weight the venom spurting from these
people - and for what reason? Because I made a silly little joke?
Hell - it wasn't even a joke, it was just a passing humorous term that
wasn't even the point of the message - a throwaway line that should
have caused a chuckle, or maybe a "jeeze, you're bad" cluck-cluck -
and that's the end of it. But listen to these people. You'd think I
ate babies or something.
You know Todd Snider?

Now maybe I'm dirty and maybee I smoke a little dope
But it aint like I'm going on T.V. and tearing up pictures of the Pope
I know I get wild I know I get drunk
But it aint like I gotta lot of bodies in my trunk
....
I think I'm an alright guy
I think I'm an alright guy
I just wanna live unitll I gotta die
I know I aint perfect but God knows I try
I think I'm an alright guy
I think I'm alright
************************
So do I want people like that to have easy access to me? I don't
think so. I'm not THAT concerned about it - as you know I mentioned
my real name and website in other posts, so it's not like I try that
hard to hide. And any reasonably savvy person would have no problem
figuring out how to find me. But there are some unstable folks out
there, and I'd just as soon not give them a key to my house.
And I don't think I'd sell too many CD's by virtue of being known
here. Maybe 10 or even 20, but that's not particularly significant.
I'm just here for entertainment, not as a sales tool.
I am putting the finishing touches on another CD, I hope to have
copies made in Febriary or so. I'll probably try to sell that one
more aggressively - I think it's a lot better than the first one. I'll
try to do some gigs around here and actually sell them rather than
giving them away - and at that time I'll probably start selling the
first one rather than giving it away as well.

Most of those are cross-posted. I only read a few groups - like Dylan
and rmmga and rmmg and a couple others.

No - mine is more electric and rock n roll. I WISH I could write,
sing and play as well as the stuff I've heard of George's.

Jeeze - what are you doing - stalking me?

You're smarter than many of the other people around here. You seem to
listen better and be a little more in tune to things, rather than just
knee-jerking a response.
> Doesn't sound at all like a guy who wouldn't understand why

Uhh.. well... sensitive? Actually, you might very well be offended
by some of my songs. If you found my remark that started this little
forest fire offensive, then you might not care for my sense of humor.
So I'll send you a copy of my CD if you want, but if you're going to
take offense at what you hear, then maybe you should not bother giving
me a mailing address.

Again - I don't read those groups. If any of my posts show up there,
it's only because I responded to another post in something like
rec.music.dylan and those other groups were included in the response
list.
I used to post on political groups under another name, but I just
don't see the point of arguing with morons and zealots - and that's
what those groups are all about. I just got tired of it, and I don't
want to be particularly argumentative, confrontational or offensive. I
can easily take care of myself, and my thin is thick enough to not
care what posters hurla at me, and I could easily slip into fighting
mode, but I'd rather not.

Beats me. I just used what I thought was a completely innocuous and
humorous term - one that I have used plenty of times in the past in a
variety of situations and NEVER gotten any kind of negative response
like this. NEVER. I mean really - what is the big deal?
Well, I actually do know what the deal is, and it doesn't really have
anything to do with the term I used, but I don't particularly want to
go into it here because it's not flattering to those people, and
they're already pissed off enough at me, so we'll just let that ride.
It really doesn't matter.
Besides, I've already written a whole freakin' BOOK here. I can be
very verbose when writing stream-of-consciousness. Sorry.
