Check the nut slot for wear. Make sure it's not so deep that the string is
getting pinched and can't move freely. You could also try lubricating the
nut slot with graphite powder (or just rub it with a #2 pencil). That might
help a little, but it sounds to me like it's probably just accumulated
mechanical stress. The plain strings can only handle so many whole step
changes before they'll let go. So ramp up your string-changing schedule
(new strings for every gig), or as others mentioned... drag along another
guitar to the gig, for the altered tuning.
I get a lot of mileage out of my low E string going back and forth to Drop
D tuning, but I avoid playing the few songs I know in DADGBD very often,
because the high E just can't take much of that abuse. At least not on my
normal string-changing schedule.
