I just bought an Epson Stylus Photo R300 from www.newegg.com for $127.50, with a mail-in rebate that brings the cost down to $107.00 (USD). It includes a tray for printing on CD's or DVD's; the kind you can get now with the white printable surface, which was the main reason I was interested in it.
FWIW, I bought a new HP computer a couple months back with a Lightscribe DVD (+ CD) burner. You burn the CD or DVD, flip it over in the tray, then "burn" the label. The label side of the disc has an optically sensitive coating such that the same laser that burns the track, burns the label.
Right now, the labels are only available in hi-def gray-scale, but color is supposed to be coming "real soon now." (From what I gather, the "color" implementation will require an "upgrade" of the discs themselves, and an upgrade of the drive's EPROM which would be a simple download-and-install).
The effect isn't exactly "stunning," but it is much better than that obtained from paper labels.
The constraints to the system are:
1) Must buy "Lightscribe" CDs or DVDs, but the cost, I've found, is only slightly above that of regular name-brand CDs or DVDs.
2) Must have the Lightscribe drive, of course--although I just saw a standalone unit selling at OfficeMax for $129 and an internal unit for $109.
3) Need to have compatible software (an "LE" version of one product came with the computer, but I have no experience with that which probably comes with the add-in drives).
