Jayaramanjee: I don't know why you chose to send me the Marathi film
song from 1930s, 'raat paDe nagaraat'. But thanks, anyway, for sending
it to me.
Now to your claim that the voice quality and rendition in that song is
better than Lata's. You seriously need therapy. Submit yourself to
electric shocks which cause you so much tizzy that all the nonsense
about Lata floating in your head should fall out of it. Such songs are
dime a dozen from 1930s films. Nobody who has been a regular singer in
Indian films, at least in North Indian films, is any match for Lata in
several categories. Overall, too, she is supreme. If you don't like
her singing, that's okay. Just don't pretend that you have access to
songs from 1930s which show superior prowess than Lata's.
Since you have misfired once again, let me help you out with an
instance in which Lata has been outshined by a 1930s Marathi singer.
If you listen to Lata's duet with Shanta Apte in Subhadra (mai.n
khilii khilii phuulawaree, which is/was available on indianscreen
site), Shantabai's full bodied voice leaves far better impression
because the song was more suited for her type of voice than Lata's.
Lata was still tentative in her approach and she was singing a song
not catering to her strengths. Yet, nobody in his right mind would
claim that Shanta Apte was a better singer than Lata.
A very knowledgeable 1930s fan was quite unhappy when I said Saigal
can sit at home when compared to Lata; he expected me to speak up for
the 1930s stalwart. But this point has also been discussed before on
rmim, and Sanjeev had weighed in that Lata is much more sureeli than
Saigal. I mentioned the Lata-Saigal comparison and the unhappiness my
statement caused to another rmim-er as technically strong as Sanjeev,
and he also laughed that Lata's obvious technical superiority should
be so hard for Saigal fans (grand total: 173 songs over 15-16 years)
to accept.
Coming up with 3-minute evidence which would prove that Lata was just
one of the singers ('nothing special' category) is a fool's errand.
