I am just wondering - is there something that can be done about this?
Of course it could be made a moderated group, but that's a lot of work
for people who would volunteer to work as moderators.

I am not sure if anything can be done to stop the spam, but the
practice followed on RMIC of changing the titles of such postings to
"SPAM" helps: it makes it easy to spot the bona fide postings amidst
the junk and also keeps the sometimes offensive subject lines out of
sight. I do it now and then; if each of us did it whenever we
encounter spam, it would make the situation more bearable.

Warm regards,
Abhay

The "spam" marking procedure should be working fine. But it seems that
the spam messages are sometimes reverting to their original subject
line even after someone changes the subject line to "SPAM". This is
while accessing RMIM via Google Groups.

The increase in such messages not related to group are increasing and
as said by veterans of group that there in no way to stop it.Someone
very wisely said ' you do not bite the hand that feeds you ( ie
Google) by that count google must be over fed by now.
Whatever it is --- one thing is sure out group is getting popular..so
be happy.

Frankly, I feel it's a useless endeavor to change the subject of spam
messages to "SPAM" on Google Groups. I noticed someone had done that
yesterday for all spam messages, but today morning all messages are
back to their original spam-titles. How can a software program (the
one that is showing the subject line of a post and the id of the
poster) change at different times of the day unless the people running
the program are changing it deliberately?

IMO, the "Spam" marking is working, at least on Google Groups. I don't
see any Spam marked message with more than 2 posts, which means the
spammers are not targeting the same thread again. They would go on and
post a new thread instead. Let's just continue to do it whenever we
see them. It would defeat their purpose (of grabbing attention and
visibility) because with the marking fewer people will click and read
the post. And who knows, they may decide to leave us alone. Even if
they don't, at least it will be easier to scan RMIM for the ikkaa-
dukkaa genuine post among the deluge.

The only thing I'd like to add is, let's please mark the Subject of
these messages with just the 4-letter word "SPAM" -- not "this message
is spam" or "don't read this, it's spam" or "spam here" or "avoid this
spam message" and so on.

Just "SPAM"

Keeps things clean, AND helps those news readers which support
killfiling certain Subjects.
